Yes, I think there's no way around questioning a choice for a kit that time, space, and money intensive. I just got done watching the recent D2 Bozzio/Wackerman duet DVD, and Bozzio's drumset should get a mention as a third star of the DVD. [img]biggrin.gif[/img]

However, watching him play helps put it in perspective. Bozzio has always been a rock drummer from an orchestral background. From what I read, he studied classical percussion at the College of Marin, near me here in No. California. I think this, more than anything, got him the Zappa gig. His orchestral roots are really showing these days, and he seems to be embracing them in a new way, even to the point of playing this kit in orchestral settings in Europe--probably a little more "possible" musically than trying to do it in the current, stodgy US scene. It seems like a natural extension of his body of work to me.

The way he plays this kit--which seems to dictate the requirements of the kit (and I think this is where he comes from in terms of its sheer size)--is wanting to make the drums a melodic solo instrument upfront, as others have noted here. Does it need more justification than that? It's tending toward marimba or piano, while still keeping the timbre of drums. In the interviews I've heard/read with him, he claims this as one of his goals.

My feeling watching this DVD is that he's pretty much achieved that goal. He's really into it, and does some cool things. He talks about Miles Davis's approach to melody, and wanting to set up melodic figures and then play outside them for tension. It's clear he has a big vision for what he's doing--kind of like an experimental jazz vision for comping with rock and orchestral chops. While Wackerman has some serious chops, Bozzio is the compositional heavy here. A lot of times I just wanted Chad to chill and take a walk and let Terry get his own groove on. Chad, though tasty at times, definitely felt like an accessory here to the main act.

Also--had to watch the promotional DW drums segments, and Steve Holmes's comment about DW drums almost all sounding like a "cup of ass" kept going through my head, making me laugh, while Terry, Chad, Steve Perkins, Gary Novak, Shiela E et. al. just went on and about DW as the best drums on the planet. You gotta smile at the tension between marketing, and marketing backlash!!

So yes, ridiculing people's choices can be easy and fun...to a certain point. But it just occurs to me: I think all the different approaches to the kit are awesome and expand (or at least remind me of ) my understanding of the instrument. Sure, some of them don't work for me but whatever. And beside this, using precious time dissing him for his choices--or Mangini for his, for that matter--is wasted breath that I could be out doing my own thing, developing my own vision.

Ironically, the friend who loaned me this DVD also loaned me the Steve Jordan "The Groove is Here" in which Steve rocks a four piece kit with the simplest grooves you can imagine. OK, maybe deceptively simple--the dude is awesome and can play. His whole concept seems to be so counter most drum DVDs: "Simple is not stupid." He just goes on and on: "I played this groove with James Brown...I wrote this for Cheryl Crow...with Keith Richards...with BB King...the Brecker Brothers...Robert Cray..." Some of it put me to sleep but I'm like, dizamn, man, if that's what it takes to play with all those cats maybe I should put 50% of my stuff in storage and forget anything I heard on a fusion record.

Again, vive la difference. It's cool that cats find so many ways to approach the huge set of instruments we call drums. Cool that there are so many ways to make music, and to be successful. You just gotta getcha own, ya know?

[img]biggrin.gif[/img] Absolutely! I think if they ever make 'Spinal Tap' 2, TBoz's kit should be used as a template to lampoon the drummer with an enormous kit.(starts out a'la Slim Jim Phantom kit and expands to a kit of TBoz/Rube Goldberg proportions.)
